The Museum of Liverpool is a city history museum on a significant scale that has enabled NML to examine the extraordinary and complex story of Liverpool from earliest times to the present day. It is concerned with creating a place for wellbeing and pursuing social justice for the people of Liverpool.
hsd was commissioned as ‘Coordinating Designers’ to deliver the overall design system, plus 60% of all gallery spaces, all wayfinding and hands-on environments for this major new UK museum. Our approach was to implement accessible, family-learning focussed exhibition spaces, which captured the unique spirit of Liverpool and Liverpudlian communities. Implementing a flexible design system, we have enabled the Museum of Liverpool to continually refresh and reinvent aspects of the displays, thereby creating an ongoing and vital dialogue with local communities.
The Museum has won numerous awards since its phased opening in 2011 including Museum of the Year Award 2013 – European Council, Council of Europe Museum Prize 2013 and Joint Winner of the Sustainability Award – Museums & Heritage Awards for Excellence, 2012 (10th Anniversary Awards).
