hsd Delivers Signage and Interpretive Wayfinding

Funded by Fáilte Ireland under the Destination Towns Programme, Laois County Council commissioned hsd to design new wayfinding and interpretation for the historic town centre of Portlaoise. The project aims to better present the heritage and historical significance of Portlaoise in an engaging manner that is informative and evocative to both residents and visitors alike, and to create a sense of place.

External interpretation will convey the darker side of history through a number of select people-focused panels exploring both the Irish and English perspectives – presenting English colonial expansion in Ireland through the stories of the people it impacted.

Today it is hard for visitors to grasp the historical significance of the site of the first English plantation in Ireland, and its impact not only locally, but for the rest of the country.
