National Music Centre

hsd provided exhibition designs for the cutting edge ‘Studio Bell’ – a dynamic new visitor destination in Calgary. Inside the NMC are five floors of recording studios, broadcast facilities, concert venues and exhibition space, which are known as “stages”, filled with interactive displays. Artefacts and historical memorabilia from Canada’s rich musical history are also on display. Visitors can see items such as costumes worn by Canadian music icons and even the Rolling Stones Mobile Recording Studio.

This new destination evokes the spirit of music in Canada from first nations to current music trends as well as incubating musical talent for the future. Responding to the striking new building, our design team defined a unique exhibition environment which blends sound, media, graphics and collections in a ‘festival-like’ experience.

The whole building and design language is a kit of parts, just like in a sound stage in recording studio. We have created flexible exhibit components that can be moved around the building, enabling an organic sense of growth and change!
