Royal Ontario Museum

Letting collections speak

Visitors to the Royal Ontario Museum now enjoy access to the extensive, diverse, and renowned collection like never before. From brief to final installation, hsd expertly guided the ROM towards realising the vision for Renaissance ROM in 22 galleries. The result is a landmark destination in Toronto, with the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal by Studio Daniel Libeskind and Bregmann + Haman Architects dramatically overhanging one of Canada’s most prominent intersections.

Our designers developed a sophisticated design language that complemented dynamic angles of Libeskind’s extension and neo-classical spaces of the heritage wing. We also planned dramatic vistas, connecting the ROM into a cohesive experience. Direct collaboration between hsd, curators and conservators resulted in an object-led interpretative scheme that highlights the ROM’s remarkable collection. The unobtrusive, clean interpretative design allows over 55,000 artefacts and specimens— from dinosaurs to textiles, contemporary arts to ancient cultures—to speak for themselves.
