American Battle Monuments

At hsd we have been privileged to work with museums and monument sites that commemorate those fallen in defence of our freedom. Most recently we have been commissioned by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) to contribute to the development of the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial in France and the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial site in the UK.

The ABMC honours the service, achievements and sacrifice of U.S. Armed Forces and cares for America’s overseas commemorative cemeteries and memorials.

Our team is assisting with visitor experience analysis, exhibit planning and interpretative design at the two memorial sites. At Lafayette Escadrille, which only came into the ABMC’s official ownership in 2017, we’re exploring opportunities to renovate the Caretaker Cottage, whilst the goal at the Cambridge American Cemetery is to recommend and install enhancements to the current exhibits.

Project Co-ordinator Claire Reece and Project Manager Martyn Paramore recently flew over to France to visit the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial, and reflected that, “Working with ABMC on developing the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Visitor Centre is a real privilege.

“The bravery of the American volunteer pilots who flew with French squadrons during WWI is an incredible story. hsd will be looking for creative and respectful ways to present the story of America’s first combat aviators and their French Officers that are laid to rest at Lafayette Escadrille, so that visitors to the memorial can better appreciate their contribution to WWI and their role in the history of American aviation.”
